Frequently Asked Questions
How does a Breezair Evaporative Air Conditioner work?
It uses the natural principle of cooling by evaporation. Wet your finger and hold it in the air and it becomes cool; that is because evaporation is occurring; it is a natural phenomenon. In the Evaporative Air Conditioner a pump circulates water through a set of cooling pads through which air is forced by a motor driven fan. The hot outside air passing through the pads evaporates the water in the wetted pads at a very high rate. This cools the air which is then pumped into your building.
How much can Breezair Evaporative Air Conditioning reduce the temperature?
That depends on the temperature and humidity of the outside air (the ambient temperature). Have a look at the temperature chart below and you will see the answer For example, at a temperature of 25°C and a relative humidity of 50% the air from a Breezair Evaporative Air Conditioner will be at 20°C, i.e. a 5°C drop. Or, at a temperature of 35°C and a relative humidity of 30% the air from the Cooler will be 25°C, i.e. a 10°C drop.
How much water does the Breezair use?
The amount of water used is directly proportional to the amount of cooling being supplied — more water used, more cooling supplied. The water consumption is also affected by the humidity of the day — more humidity, less water used. It also depends on the setting of the machine — high speed operation uses more water. And finally, it depends on the Bleed setting. As a guide we can advise that, at minimum Bleed setting and at high speed setting and at a Relative Humidity (RH) of 30%, the water usage is about 7 Litres/hr per 1000 m3/h of air flow. At a Relative Humidity (RH) of 50% the rate is about 5 Litres/hr per 1000 m3/h air flow.
Does it clean the air?
Yes it does. The hot dusty air from outside is cleaned as it passes through the wetted cooling pads, where airborne particles are trapped by the cooling pads and many smaller impurities such as pollens and pollution are also reduced.
Why must the doors and windows be left open?
Because the air being pumped in collects heat and moisture and impurities from inside the building and it must therefore be exhausted. The Evaporative Air Conditioner does NOT recirculate the inside air, and if you close the building the effectiveness of the machine will be greatly diminished and you will become very uncomfortable.
Does Evaporative Air Conditioning increase the humidity?
In most cases, it does slightly. BUT remember that the temperature has also dropped. It is the combination of temperature and humidity that creates human comfort, and Evaporative Air Conditioners are used so widely around the world because they can create comfortable conditions. For example, 80% humidity and 30°C is very uncomfortable, but 80% humidity and 16°C is quite comfortable. Furthermore, comfort is also improved by increasing air velocity in hot conditions and Evaporative Air Conditioners create sufficient air movement to also minimise the effects of humidity.
What is the recommended maximum humidity?
For good results, we recommend that outdoor humidity should not exceed about 60% at the hottest part of the day. And don’t forget that the humidity is lowest when the temperature is highest during a normal 24 hour cycle, and your humidity may be a lot lower than you think when the temperature is extreme. That is when you want maximum cooling and that is when your Breezair Evaporative Air Conditioner will function best.
Does Breezair Evaporative Air Conditioner use much power?
You will be surprised at how little power it uses – much less than conventional air conditioners. Running costs can be 80% less than conventional types.
I have been told that Evaporative Air Conditioners are bad for my body!
That is untrue. Evaporative Air Conditioners are excellent for health. They provide basic moisture that the human body needs; they remove unhealthy pollution from your indoor environment; they supply 100% fresh, filtered air into your building that is NEVER recirculated; they remove static electricity; they have proved to be successful in reducing the effects of illnesses such as asthma. In fact, Evaporative Air Conditioning is much more healthy than conventional air conditioning.
Is Breezair easy to maintain?
Yes, because they are simple machines. Those with V-belt drives need the drive system checked and adjusted once a year. Otherwise you need to check and clean the cooling pads regularly, depending on the level of pollution in the environment – at least every 6 months. In clean locations, once a year is enough. Clean cooling pads mean highest cooling performance and that is what you want. Check the water tank (reservoir) once a year and clean out if necessary. Follow the Owner’s Guide book.
What is “Bleed”?
Breezair machines have a Bleed feature (some automatic, some manual) that allows a small amount of water to bleed to waste in order to reduce the salt concentration in the tank reservoir. This prolongs machine and cooling pad life and reduces maintenance.
How can I determine what model to use?
Our employees are trained to work with you to select the correct model and quantity of Evaporative Air Conditioners for your project. Often multiple machines are required. The calculations may be made on the basis of the Heat Load in your building, or on the basis of the required Air Changes per hour for your locality. The calculation is based on traditional air conditioning practice and is completely transparent to anyone who wants more information.
What do you mean by Spot Cooling?
Often, in large industrial buildings there are locations within the building where the heat is concentrated for a variety of reasons. You don’t need to air condition the whole building, you only need that spot to be more comfortable. It might be a furnace operation, or a part of a painting process, or a concentration of people, or a cluster of injection moulding machines. Spot Cooling by Breezair can dramatically improve the conditions in that location and improve your productivity and cost you much less than installing conventional air conditioning.
